Yellow Tulip

TIP - You may have to adjust the size of the pattern when you print it.   The original is 3" accross the round.

SUPPLIES - -3 1/2" surface sealed with white gesso, size 4 flat shader brush, paper towels, palette knife, palette paper, Q-Tips (optional).

GENESIS ARTIST COLORS -- White, Yellow White, Yellow Ochre, Flesh 7, Pyrrole Red 3; Permanent Green 6, Pthalo Blue 8, Gray 6.

COLOR MIXES
YELLOW
   
Highlight = White + Yellow White
     Light = Yellow White
     Medium = Yellow White + Yellow Ochre
     Dark = Yellow Ochre

GREEN
     Highlight = Light Tulip Mix
     Light = Medium Green + White + Yellow White
     Medium = Flesh 7 + Permanent Green 6 + Yellow White
     Dark = Medium Green + Gray 6

TULIP - Undercoat the hilight areas with White. Place light values on all petals as shown on the Value Map. Place medium values and blend. Place Dark values and blend. Dip just the corner of your brush in Pyrrole Red 3. Use the corner of the brush to place red edges on the petals. Blend the red with a clean brush. Reload and reinforce the red on the front petals. With the red still in your brush, walk red up from the bottom edges of the tulip. In the space between the two front leaves, place Dark Mix + Red 3 to the left and Medium Green to the right. . Wipe out Highlights with the Q tip if necessary.

LEAF -  Place the light value first. Lay medium and dark values and blend. Place the tulip stem with Medium Green and soften it up into the tulip. Lighten the left side of the stem with Light Green Mix.

BACKGROUND - After painting the tulip and leaf, loosely brush mix White + Pthalo Blue 8 and paint the background. Add Medium Green in the background area marked "M"

A Warm Snowman

Genesis Artist Colors: White, Bismuth Yellow, Genesis Red, Ultramarine Blue, Burnt Umber, Gray 8, 7, 6, 5; Black.

Brushes: Old size 6 or 8 bright, small round, good size 6 flat, liner brush.

Other Supplies: 4" x 6" Slate, regular painting supplies,

  1. Wash slate with soap and water. Rinse and dry. Apply pattern with white graphite.

  2. Place shading under hat, around eyes, nose, scarf and waist with Gray 6. Shade left of left scarf bottom and around left side and bottom of snowman with Gray 5.

  3. Begin with White on the old bright brush and use the corner of the brush to dab paint in the center of the White area on the face. Change to Gray 8 as you move to the left, then Grey 7, and Gray 6, dabbing to blend the values.

  4. Paint each section of the snowman in this manner.

  5. Place the snowdrift with Gray 8. Streak it down.

  6. Base the scarf and mouth Genesis Red plus just a touch of Gray 8. Lighten on the right edge (in the center around the neck) with sideloaded Bismuth Yellow + Genesis Red. Darken the left edge with Genesis Red + Burnt Umber sideloaded.

  7. Use the chisel edge of the flat brush and Burnt Umber to place the arms. Lighten the top of each arm with streaked Burnt Umber + White.

  8. Base the Hat and Mittens with Ultramarine Blue + Gray 5. (Green = Bismuth Yellow + Ultramarine Blue + Burnt Umber). Sideload White (in the UMB brush) and add the lights. Wipe the brush out, load Ultramarine Blue + Gray 5 again, sideload Black, and place the dark area next to the brim of the hat. Green Light = Green Mix + Bismuth Yellow + White. Green Dark = Green Mix + Burnt Umber. Use the liner brush with the base blue mix to place the fringe on the scarf.

  9. Use Black on the round brush to place the eyes and nose, and to line the mouth. Lighten on the lower left of each eye with sideloaded White. Clean the brush, load White and place shines in the eyes and nose.

  10. Load Genesis Red + Burnt Umber and place the lettering. Place 3 dots of red above the brim of the hat.
