Issues in Education

"School Works" (or does it?)

David Berliner

Coauthor of "Manufactured Crisis: Myth. Fraud and the Attack on Public Education," confronts the critics of public education with evidence that schools are working, even improving, and argues that unfounded criticisms are eroding public support for a system that does more than we think to help kids.

Marc Tucker

President of the National Center on Education and the Economy and coauthor of "Thinking for a Living," argues that schools are not doing enough to prepare students for work in a rapidly changing world and that the pressures of a dissatisfied public is the only thing that can move us beyond the status quo.

Please e-mail us your reactions to the points listed above. On May 28, 1996 we will begin to post the differing sides of this debate.
