Otho/Kalo/Coalville Scholarship Fund, Inc.

In 2000 a scholarship fund was begun for the people living in the Otho School District. This scholarship was started with the efforts of Brenda Crouse, who owns and operates the “This “N’ That Country Store in Coalville, Iowa. Brenda saw a need for a scholarship fund and felt that she had the ability to get it off the ground. Brenda said, “The area and its people have been good to me, this is one way I can help out.”.

Anyone, of any age that is planning to attend a accredited school and they have lived for at least 4 years in the Otho School District may apply. The scholarship is funded by raffles held at the Country Store. Brenda has seen the vision of making this work and she has searched out ways to get this scholarship off and running. Brenda said, "Donations are accepted and if anyone would like to contribute they may make their checks payable to The Otho/Kalo/Coalville Scholarship Fund, Inc." Checks may be dropped off at the store or mailed to: 23930 Boies Street, Fort Dodge, Iowa 50501.

The Fund President is Brenda Crouse

Other criteria of qualifying for the scholarship, is not only having lived in the area for at least 4 years, but the person must have a reference from someone living in the area or a teacher. Also there is an application to be completed. This application may be found here on the Coalville, Iowa Homepage, please print a copy and mail it in by April 1, 2002. Applications may also be picked up at This “N” That Country Store in Coalville, The City of Otho Building, and Fort Dodge Senior High.

In 2001 there were 2- $300.00 scholarships awarded last school year, one was awarded to Julie Huen a student going to attend Drake University. The other recipient was an Iowa Central Community College Student, Richie Crouse.

The amount of the scholarship will depend on the money Brenda raises and what donations come in for this school year. The current fundraiser Brenda is working with, is selling Raffle tickets for a quilt and a quilt rack. The tickets are $1.00 per ticket or 6 tickets for $5.00.

The Board of the Scholarship Fund chose the recipients wisely, as Brenda states, “Not just the smart kids will be considered, but anyone has a chance at being considered.” The board wants this scholarship to help someone wanting to further their education, so all area residents are encouraged to apply.
