Swede Point Prairie

 PRAIRIE EDUCATION SITE

With the cooperation and support of our partners, the Boone County Soil and Water Conservation District, Boone County ISU Extension, and Story County Conservation Board, Boone County Conservation will be constructing a prairie education site at Swede Point Park.

The proposed area in the park is located east of the naturalist’s residence and encompasses approximately 2.6 acres that will be planted in stages.   The species used will be local Iowa eco-type plants and will be marked by signage in individual plots that are to be bordered by a larger stand of mixed species.

We anticipate the participation by local community schools, conservation agencies, service clubs, and organizations in the use of this site to educate and promote environmental stewardship.  This site will offer one more venue for outdoor classroom instruction, and along with the park’s close proximity to the Iowa Arboretum, we anticipate that it will attract visitors from the surrounding counties as well.

Gardening organizations and those interested in gardening will be enlisted to help maintain the project once it has been started.  The project will also include an opportunity for local residents to adopt and care for a specific plot.

If you are interested in helping with this project, contact Jayne Smith 515-432-2316.
