FARNHAMVILLE LIBRARY HISTORY

The Federated Women's Study Club organized the Library in 1927 using donated books and borrowing books from the Traveling Library. The women served as librarians until 1939 when the town was given jurisdiction of the library.

The Ambrose Burdick house on Garfield Ave. served as the first library building. It was later moved to the Crissinger Building back rooms which were formerly a doctor's office. In 1949, the books were moved to the town maintenance building. In 1962, the Earl Harter Produce Building was purchaded for $1800. It was remodeled then and again in 1970. In 1989, the building was razed to make room for the new Security Savings Bank. The Library found temporary quarters in the old bank building for $25,000. The library board and many volunteers raised money through fundraising projects: concession stands at Old Settlers Day for 3 years, 2 farm sale lunches; raffled an afhgan made and donated by Helen Frotscher, a quilt made and donated by Edie Knittig, and a Hawkeye quilt and a football. Other organizations and individuals also contributed to make the Building Fund a success!

Many volunteer also contributed hours of work to convert the bank into a library. We are proud of the work they all did to make it a pleasant place to be.

A ramp provides access for the handicapped and an outside bookdrop makes it convenient to return books when the library is closed.

Plans are being made to expand the services of the library in order to serve more patrons. If you have a new idea. please talk to the librarian or library board member about it.
